Dockland data
centre campus

About the campus

Approved by Newham Council in December 2024, our campus comprises three data centre buildings, associated infrastructure, and a Multi-Function Building (MFB). The MFB will serve to support a number of opportunities for the local community that are outlined below.

The site

The site, formerly a paint factory next to Tate & Lyle, has been vacant for decades, and will now be redeveloped as a modern data centre campus.

The development will enable the use of renewable energy sources and exhibit indigenous vegetation. The campus will be designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability, while enhancing comfort, health and wellness for future employees.

LOCAL JOBS

524 during construction, and additional non-construction opportunities in the future once the campus is up and running.

EDUCATION
& TRAINING

Programmes for members of the community.

COMMUNITY SPACES

Made available for a variety of uses.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Designing a new pocket park and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists to access to the river. Improved public realm adjacent to West Silvertown DLR station will also be created.

Job Alert

From construction to engineering, security, cleaning, landscaping and facilities management, there are plenty of job opportunities available.

What is a data centre?

A data centre is a specialized facility that houses powerful computers, storage systems, and networking equipment to store, process, and distribute digital information. It serves as the backbone of the internet, enabling everything from streaming videos and online shopping to cloud computing and banking transactions. Small and large businesses, governments, and tech companies rely on data centres to keep their websites, applications, and critical systems running 24/7. These facilities are designed with advanced cooling, power backup, and security systems to ensure reliability and protect sensitive data. Some data centres are massive, spanning millions of square feet, while others are smaller and serve specific industries or regions. In short, data centres power the digital world, ensuring seamless connectivity and access to information.

Each time you browse the internet, stream a video, or use social media, data centres are working behind the scenes to store and process the data that makes these services possible.

The total investment in UK data centres since the General Election has risen to over £25billion.1

The UK is a world-leader in the data sector

Data centres create plenty of jobs. Not only do they create jobs at each facility, but they also open employment opportunities across supply and customer chains, construction, maintenance and IT.

The Government has already taken great strides to support the industry by designating data centres as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI).2
